Grades 1-3 Reading Diagnostic: administer as late in the window as possible - target Sep 21-25, makeups Sep 28-30. This is the grade 1-3 literacy measure. It sets RIMP identification and feeds the K-3 Literacy Improvement component of the state report card, and a diagnostic given in the first weeks of school measures summer loss more than current ability.
500 North Market Street, Troy, Ohio 45373 | p 937.332.6700 | Teaching & Learning Aug 14, 2026. Supersedes the 2025-2026 screening windows dated 7/24/2025.
Assessment-by-Assessment Guide
Fall reading diagnostic (iReady Inform)
Ohio requires a reading diagnostic for every student in kindergarten through grade 3. Kindergarten must finish the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment by the twentieth instructional day - Tuesday, September 22. Grades 1 through 3 must finish by Wednesday, September 30. Troy uses the iReady Inform to meet this requirement.
Why the fall administration requires special attention
Grades 1 and 2 have no state test. The fall reading diagnostic is the closest thing they have to one, and it carries real consequence:
- It determines which students are identified as not on track, and every one of those students must be placed on a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan with written parent notification.
- It feeds the K-3 Literacy Improvement component of the Ohio School Report Card.
Administer grades 1-3 iReady Reading Inform as late in the window as possible
We recommend testing grades 1-3 as late in the window as possible, ideally targeting the week of September 21 to 25. Makeups can then happen from September 28 to 30, right before the statutory deadline. A diagnostic given in the first weeks of school measures summer learning loss more than it measures what a student can currently do. Every additional instructional day before testing produces a truer picture. Treat this with the same importance as a state test, because the consequences are meaningful.
District assessments
These are Troy's own measures. The windows below were set by the Director of Teaching and Learning and are not subject to building change.
| Assessment | When | Who takes it and why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| iReady Inform: Reading & Math | Fall: Aug 24 - Sep 25 Winter: Jan 4 - Jan 29 Spring: Apr 26 - May 24 |
Grades K-8. Three times a year. Places students on a learning path, satisfies the state reading diagnostic requirement in K-3, and provides the growth data used in building and district planning. |
| iReady Growth Monitoring | Available Mon Nov 16 Available Mon Mar 8 |
Grades K-8. A single available date each time, not a window. A brief probe between diagnostics. It tells teachers whether instruction is moving students. |
| District Literacy Screening | Same windows as the diagnostic | Grades K-6. Mixed Case Letter Naming, Mixed Case Letter Sound, Pseudoword Decoding, and Oral Reading Fluency. Which measures a student takes depends on grade and term. |
| Tier 1 Dyslexia Screening | Spring of the kindergarten year, inside the spring screening window | Kindergarten. Mixed Case Letter Naming Fluency plus Pseudoword Decoding Fluency. Required by ORC 3323.25. Statute also permits January of the grade 1 year; Troy screens in spring of KG. |
| NNAT3 | Feb 22 - Feb 26 (estimated) | Grade 2, whole grade. Nonverbal ability screening for gifted identification. Satisfies the requirement for one screening before the end of grade 2. |
| CogAT | Oct 19 - Oct 29 (estimated) | Grade 5, whole grade. Second gifted ability screening, satisfying the requirement before the end of grade 6. |
| Fall ACT, SAT and PSAT | Dates to be confirmed | High school. A building administration, separate from the state-funded grade 11 test that runs in the spring - a student may sit both. The PSAT/NMSQT is normally given in October and is how juniors enter National Merit consideration. |
State assessments
Windows below are published by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. Buildings select exact days inside each window except where Troy has already made the selection.
| Assessment | When | Who takes it and why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten Readiness Assessment | Aug 24 - Sep 22 | Kindergarten. Administered in small increments across several weeks, not in one sitting. Must be complete by the twentieth instructional day. KReady data entry closes Nov 1. |
| OST Fall Grade 3 ELA | Oct 21 - Oct 27 (Troy selected) | Grade 3. Test Wednesday Oct 21 and Thursday Oct 22; makeups Friday Oct 23, Monday Oct 26, Tuesday Oct 27. The first of three opportunities to meet the promotion score under the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Results release Dec 8. |
| EOC Exams - Fall | Nov 30 - Dec 18 (Troy block) | Grades 9-12. ELA II, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, American History, American Government. The state window is Nov 30 - Jan 15. Fall is the exception to the last-fifteen rule: Troy takes the FIRST fifteen consecutive school days, which land exactly on Dec 18, so the whole administration finishes before Winter Break. |
| OST Spring ELA | Apr 12 - Apr 30 (Troy block) | Grades 3-8 and ELA II. The state window is Mar 29 - Apr 30; Troy administers the last fifteen consecutive school days of it. |
| OST Spring Math, Science, Social Studies | Apr 26 - May 14 (Troy block) | Grades 3-8 and EOC courses. Science in grades 5 and 8. The state window is Apr 5 - May 14; Troy administers the last fifteen consecutive school days of it. |
| OELPS - EL Screener | Aug 4 - Jun 30 OELPS-BK: Aug 4 - Dec 31 OELPS-K: Jan 1 - Jun 30 |
Any student whose home language survey indicates a language other than English. Screen within 30 days of enrollment. Kindergarten has its own two windows. |
| OELPA / Alt-OELPA | Feb 1 - Mar 26 | All identified English learners, annually, across four domains. See the warning below - Troy's real deadline is earlier than the state's. |
| AASCD | Feb 22 - Apr 16 | Students whose IEP designates the alternate assessment. One-to-one administration across multiple sessions. Participation above one percent requires a district justification. |
| State-funded ACT | Feb 23 - Mar 5 (Window 1) | Grade 11, and the score that counts toward the remediation-free standard. Troy administers the ACT rather than the SAT. Of the three ACT windows Troy takes the first: the paper test date is Tuesday Feb 23, with online and accommodated testing running through Friday Mar 5. |
| Summer administrations | Grade 3 ELA: Jun 28 - Jul 2 EOC: Jun 28 - Jul 9 |
Optional. Grade 3 summer ELA is the final promotion opportunity before grade 4. Summer EOC is for graduation retakes. |
