Kindergarten & First Grade Eligibility Changes

2026 - 2027 Kindergarten & First Grade Requirements

Effective for the 2026-2027 school year, Ohio House Bill 114 has changed the eligibility age for students entering public school. Children must now meet the age requirement by the first day of instruction rather than August 1 or September 30. Troy City Schools' first day of instruction is August 20, 2026.

Please use the guide below to determine if your child is eligible for enrollment.

ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL


Kindergarten:
Must be 5 years old on or before August 20, 2026.

1st Grade:
Must be 6 years old on or before August 20, 2026.

1ST GRADE EXCEPTION


Does the child turn 6 AFTER the First Day of School?

They may still enroll in 1st Grade ONLY IF:

  • They have successfully completed an accredited Kindergarten program (Public or Chartered Non-Public).

NOT ELIGIBLE


Kindergarten:
Child turns 5 AFTER the First Day of School.

1st Grade:
Child turns 6 AFTER the First Day of School AND did not complete an accredited Kindergarten.
