Screening at School
K, 1st, 3rd, 5th,  9th - vision and hearing screening
7th - vision screening
11th - hearing screening

The nurse will send home referrals for those students who fail the school screening and need further evaluation by a physician.


Immunizations for School
Ohio State Law and Troy School District Policy provide that no student may remain in school for more than fourteen (14) days if he/she has not received, or is not in the process of receiving, the required immunizations:

Kindergarten:    5 DTaP (Diphtheria/Tetanus/Acellular Pertussis)
                       4 IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine)
                       3 Hepatitis B
                       2 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
                       2 Varicella (Chicken Pox)

7th grade:     Tdap (Tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis)
                            Meningitis vaccine

12th grade:    Meningitis vaccine (If the first meningitis vaccine was received before 16 years old, a second meningitis vaccine is needed to meet the requirement.)  Additional Information

If your child has received Tdap within 5 years of entering 7th grade then this will meet the requirement and your child will not need to be re-immunized for entry to 7th grade. You will need to provide documentation to the school.

Students new to the district: Immunization compliance will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Lice 
How does a person discover head lice?  Constant itching and scratching of the scalp often is the first sign that a person has head lice.  Head lice may look like grayish specks moving rapidly on the scalp and hair. Look for the nits (eggs) which are tiny, oval and are white or grayish.  The nits are secured to the hair with a water resistant glue and cannot be easily removed.  They may look like dandruff, but they will not move off the hair.  More often, the nits are at the nape of the neck, behind the ears, or in the bangs, but look everywhere. 

How are head lice treated?  Most products are available at the drug store without a prescription.  Follow the directions on the product carefully.  Also, all nits must be removed. 

Treat your house, too!  The nits and lice MUST BE REMOVED from the house to prevent re-infestation.  All used clothing, bed linens and towels must be washed in HOT water and dried in dryer.  Combs and brushes must be boiled in water for 20 minutes.  Furniture, carpet, mattresses, and car must be vacuumed.

Troy City Schools Pediculosis (Lice) Policy
Identified students are sent home the day of identification, with instruction concerning appropriate treatment of individual(s) and environmental care.  Parents/Guardians are instructed that school policy requires that students return to school only if free and clear of lice.  If the student returns to school without complete removal of lice, they will be sent home until they are lice free.  Students should be able to return to school within 1 day (including weekends) after being sent home.  Parents /Guardians have the responsibility to continually remove nits, even though the student may return to school with nits.  Those who remain out for extended periods of time due to ineffective treatment will be turned over to the Principal who has the authority  to notify the School Attendance Officer which may result in a court referral.
