Scholarships for Student Caregivers

As the population of older adults continues to grow and life spans lengthen, more and more young people are taking on the role of caregiver for older loved ones. While the exact number of young people taking on this responsibility is not well understood, it’s estimated to be well over 1 million.

On top of their demanding caregiving duties, many of these young people are simultaneously pursuing high school, college or graduate-level education. Scholarships for student-caregivers help ease the financial burden faced by these extremely hardworking students.

We understand that student caregivers may not have the time to scour the Internet to find available scholarships to help them pay for college. That’s why we’re handling some of that research by compiling and updating the below list to ensure they have access to the latest caregiver scholarships and information.

2019 John Permenter Soccer Scholarships

In 1976 John H. Permenter co-founded the Troy Recreational Soccer program and volunteered to coach his daughter’s team. He knew little about the game of soccer but spent most of his spare time educating himself on the rules of the game. Soon into his journey he befriended Richard Phillips, who helped John learn the game and develop a love for soccer. For the next 22 years John would travel, play, and coach with Phillips and assist him with the Troy High School soccer team. He not only helped teach these young men life lessons, but he also instilled a sense of giving back to the community in which they each lived and played.

During his coaching years John, along with other soccer minded individuals proposed the idea of hosting a Soccer Tournament. The tournament would not only provide a weekend of soccer for the players, but would help raise money for the soccer programs within Troy, OH. In 1998 John’s idea became a reality and the Troy Soccer Tournament was born.

In holding true to the values in which it was formed, the tournament committee voted to allocate a portion of the proceeds each year to a scholarship program. In 2003 it was named the John Permenter Soccer Scholarship to honor the man who gave so much of his life to the soccer community.
